LED Aspect Ratios in Sports Venue Content
Most video is designed for a 16:9 rectangle. Sports venue LED isn't, and that single fact drives almost every decision in how the content gets built.
If you've ever handed a broadcast-style video to a venue's LED integrator and had it come back looking stretched, cropped, or just wrong, the problem almost certainly wasn't the video quality. It was the aspect ratio. Sports venues run some of the most extreme display shapes in the entire motion graphics industry, and designing for them well means starting from the hardware, not retrofitting a standard video after the fact.
Just How Extreme Are We Talking?
A home HD television is 16:9 (1920 pixels wide by 1080 tall, a ratio of about 1.78:1). A typical ribbon board might run 32 to 96 pixels tall, but thousands of pixels wide. Some of the largest fascia installations in major league venues stretch past 10,000 pixels wide at well under 100 pixels tall, an aspect ratio well over 100:1. There's no meaningful comparison to a television screen; it's a completely different design surface.
What Changes When You Design for the Real Ratio
- Typography behaves differently. Text that reads fine on a 16:9 screen can become illegible when compressed into 48 pixels of vertical height. Type has to be built for the actual pixel budget, not scaled down from a normal layout.
- Motion has to travel horizontally. With almost no vertical room to work with, animation on a ribbon board tends to move left-to-right (or the reverse) rather than up-and-down, a fundamentally different choreography than standard video.
- Sponsor logos need their own pass. A logo built for a square or landscape lockup usually needs to be redrawn, not resized, to hold up at extreme aspect ratios without distortion.
- Every venue is its own spec. Because ribbon board dimensions vary so much venue to venue, content built for one board's exact pixel dimensions rarely drops cleanly into another.
Why This Gets Skipped So Often
The honest answer: designing for extreme aspect ratios is slower and more specialized than working in a standard frame, so it's the first thing that gets cut when content is templated or produced by a generalist studio. It's also exactly why so much ribbon board content out there is just a scrolling logo or a stretched-out video: it's the path of least resistance, not the best result the hardware is capable of.
